Deck & railing installation on Saturna Island

Saturna is the quietest corner of the Gulf Islands — a few hundred permanent residents on roughly 31 square kilometres, with about half the island held inside the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. There is no town in the usual sense: a general store and the ferry dock at Lyall Harbour, a community hall, a volunteer fire department, and homes scattered along the shorelines and up the forested ridges in between. People who build here have chosen the remoteness on purpose, and the work tends to reflect that — considered, durable, and rarely rushed.

The land sets the terms. Mount Warburton Pike rises to just under 400m at the island's spine — the highest point in the Outer Gulf Islands, with wild goats on its bluffs — and the ground falls from there to the water at East Point, Winter Cove, Narvaez Bay, and the harbours at Lyall and Boot Cove. Homes sit on rural acreage at the end of long drives, most on well and septic, many stepped down sloped, rocky lots toward a saltwater view. Decks here are elevated, framing gets worked around grade that rarely sits flat, and access for a crew and its materials is something you plan for rather than assume.

Exposure decides what lasts. Saturna's eastern and southern shores face open water and the strong tidal currents off East Point and Boat Pass, and homes on those fronts take steady salt air. That is why powder-coated aluminum, framed tempered glass, and welded PVC membrane earn their place — they hold their finish and stay watertight where untreated metal corrodes and bare wood greys and rots. Every board and railing section also arrives by ferry on a single route with only a few sailings a day, so we measure and confirm the full run before ordering and bring what a job needs in one coordinated delivery rather than in trickles.

The east and south shores of Saturna face open water and the tidal currents off East Point and Boat Pass, so salt air is a constant on those fronts. Powder-coated aluminum, framed tempered glass, and welded PVC or capped composite are what we reach for there — each one earns its place by not corroding, rotting, or needing a fresh coat every couple of seasons.

Saturna homes tend to be spread thin — rural acreage down long unpaved drives, many off-grid, most on well and septic. Part of the assessment is working out how decking, railing, and membrane get from the drive to the deck without cutting up the ground or crossing a septic field, so the delivery is planned before the crew ever loads the ferry.

With close to half the island held inside the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, plenty of private lots share a line with protected land. On those properties we keep every footing, staging area, and bit of ground disturbance on the owner's side of the boundary.
